In jazz, there is nothing better than collective improvisation played by experienced musicians who understand each other perfectly. This is precisely the case with this album. Even the pre-composed tracks leave each band member plenty of space for artistic expression. Ralph Alessi is a figure of such charisma that his presence is felt immediately\u2014he plays wonderfully, dynamically, and with full commitment, possessing an excellent sense of the direction in which the entire band is moving. The album features 13 tracks, eight of which are original compositions by the band’s leader, Micha\u0142 Starkiewicz, one was written by Radek Wo\u015bko, and the rest are the result of collective improvisation.<\/p>\r\n
The musicians drew inspiration from nature\u2014its beauty, complexity, unpredictability, extremes, sounds, and the mechanisms that constantly regulate it. Nature speaks to us incessantly; we only need to pause and try to understand it\u2014the musicians sought to capture its message and convey it through sound.<\/p>\r\n
Despite all human civilizational achievements, it is nature that ultimately dictates human life, and the Earth is increasingly warning us not to push too far. It is beautiful, but it can also be deadly. The musicians also strove to express these extremes in their music.<\/p>\r\n
The Beat Freaks<\/b> is a jazz quartet founded in 2014 by guitarist Micha\u0142 Starkiewicz in Szczecin. The musicians boast numerous awards and individual successes, as well as collaborations with many outstanding jazzmen. The band has released two studio albums: Leon<\/i> (2016) (named in the Top Ten of 2016 by PolishJazzBlogspot journalists) and Stay Calm<\/i> (2019). Additionally, they composed the score for the film Zamoyski \u2013 Rze\u017abiarz z kamer\u0105<\/i> (Zamoyski \u2013 A Sculptor with a Camera<\/i>), which was released digitally. In 2018, the readers of JazzForum<\/i> voted the band into the Top Ten in the „Jazz Electric Bands” category and the „Jazz Band New Hope” category. The musicians have performed on the most prestigious jazz stages both in Poland and abroad.<\/p>\r\n
Ralph Alessi<\/b> is a trumpeter and composer who divides his time between Brooklyn (New York) and Bern (Switzerland). Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists such as Fred Hersch, Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Jason Moran, Sam Rivers, Tim Berne, Uri Caine, and many others. He currently records for the ECM label. As an educator, he has taught at the Eastman School of Music, NYU, and the University of Nevada-Reno. He is the founder and director of the School for Improvised Music, a visiting professor at the Accademia Nazionale del Jazz in Siena, Italy, and most recently, a faculty member at the Hochschule der K\u00fcnste Bern JAZZ.<\/p>\r\n
