The Beat Freaks kept us waiting longer than usual for their new album. On this latest release, the quartet’s special guest is the superb trumpeter and ECM Records star, Ralph Alessi.
Mechanics of Nature features 13 tracks („Lifeline” is formally split into two parts, with a separate intro). Eight of them are compositions by the group’s leader, Michał Starkiewicz, while one is credited to Radek Wośko. The remaining four are the result of collective improvisation.
Albums by The Beat Freaks are usually complemented by a very specific and elaborate conceptual background. This case is no different. Mechanics of Nature premiered on International Earth Day, and the musicians drew inspiration from nature—its beauty, unpredictability, extremes, sounds, and the mechanisms that constantly regulate it.
It must be said that The Beat Freaks have captured these sources of inspiration very accurately, interestingly painting the complexity of nature through their music. However, even without this conceptual „framework,” the quartet’s freshest work stands completely on its own merit. Furthermore, Ralph Alessi’s participation in the project is an undeniable highlight and a valuable addition.
The four short, improvised tracks, which serve as distinctive interludes throughout the narrative, are particularly interesting. Yet, a free-form approach to the musical material can also be found in the rest of the recordings. Special attention should be paid to the solo parts of individual instruments in „Broken,” built upon the powerful, assertive rhythm of the drums, or the conversational back-and-forth in „Jumping Pedestrian.” On the other hand, the hip-hop spoken-word delivery in „Lifeline” appealed to me the least.
For nearly an hour, Mechanics of Nature commands attention with intriguing ideas and their perfect execution. It showcases admirable ensemble cohesion, as well as the excellent form of individual instrumentalists. The Beat Freaks did not disappoint, delivering music that is unconventional and definitely worth your attention.

“Mechanics of Nature” zawiera 13 utworów („LIfeline” formalnie podzielony jest na dwie części z wyodrębnionym wstępem). Osiem ro kompozycje Michała Starkiewicza – lidera grupy, jedną podpisał Radek Wośko. Pozostałe cztery są wynikiem kolektywnej improwizacji.
Albumy The Beat Freaks uzupełnione są zwykle bardzo konkretnym i rozbudowanym tłem znaczeniowym. Nie inaczej jest i w tym przypadku. “Mechanics of Nature” miała swoją premierę w Międzynarodowym Dniu Ziemi, a inspiracją dla muzyków była natura, jej piękno, nieprzewidywalność, skrajność, dźwięki oraz mechanizmy, którą nieustannie ją regulują.
Trzeba przyznać, że The Beat Freaks bardzo trafnie wpisali się w przywołane źródła inspiracji i ciekawie odmalowali muzyką złożoność natury. Chociaż i bez tej „obudowy” najświeższe dzieło kwartetu broni się bez zastrzeżeń. A niewątpliwą atrakcją i cennym dodatkiem jest udział w projekcie Ralpha Alessiego.
Interesująco wypadają cztery krótkie, improwizowane utwory, będące swoistymi przerywnikami w całej narracji. Ale swobodne podejście do muzycznej materii znajdziemy również w pozostałych nagraniach. Szczególną uwagę zwracają solowe partie poszczególnych instrumentów w „Broken”, budowane na mocnym, stanowczym rytmie perkusji, czy też konwersacyjne przepychanki w „Jumping Pedestrian”. Za to najmniej przypadły mi do gustu hip-hopowe recytacje w „Lifeline”.
“Mechanics of Nature” przez niemal godzinę przykuwa uwagę intrygującymi pomysłami i perfekcyjną ich realizacją. Godnym podziwu zespołowym porozumieniem, a także świetną dyspozycją poszczególnych instrumentalistów. The Beat Freaks nie zawiedli, prezentując muzykę niebanalną i zdecydowanie wartą uwagi.
